Writing in Portuguese can be quite easy as many words are similar to English, only with slight spelling changes.
Also, the punctuation marks period (.) and comma (,) used in Portuguese have different uses than those in English.
This feature presents some basic tips that will assist you in writing Portuguese language.
Adding Suffix - Adicionando um sufixo
- For an English word ending in ‘act’ OR ‘ect’, the suffix ‘acto/ato’ OR ‘ecto/eto’ is added
E.g. :

Impacto – Impact
Aspecto – Aspect
Direto – Direct
- For an English word ending in ‘ed’, the suffix ‘ado/ada’ is added
E.g. :

Sophisticado/a – Sophisticated
- For an English word ending in ‘al’, the suffix ‘o’ is added
E.g. : Politico – Political
- For an English word ending in ‘ant’ OR ‘ent’, the suffix ‘ante/ente/ento’ is added

Punctuations - Pontuações
The use of some punctuation in Portuguese is similar to that of French.
Period (Ponto) (.)
- Marks the end of sentence.
- Separates the digits in numbers
E.g. : 1.000.000
Comma (Vírgula) (,)
- Indicates a pause in the sentence and for separation
- Is used as a decimal point
E.g. : 2.50 (English) – 2,50 (Portuguese)
The other punctuation marks such as colon (:), semicolon (;), question mark (?), exclamation mark (?), etc. have similar usage like those in English.
