
The more you know about Portuguese language, the more enthusiasm grows in you to learn the language. Portuguese language belongs to a group of languages termed “Neo-Latin” or “Romance” that developed from Latin, the lingo of Latium in Ancient Italy. It is spoken by more than 250 million people on four continents.During 15th and 16th centuries, Portugal established a colonial empire that included Timor in South-East Asia, Macau in China, Goa and other parts of India, Brazil in South America and the five African countries that make up the PALOP lusophone area: Mozambique, Angola, Sao Tome e Principe, Guine-Bissau and Cape Verde. Since then, the Portuguese language expanded worldwide. It is spoken in Portugal, Brazil, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Malaysia, Malacca, in the former territories of Portuguese India (Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Diu, Gogol, Simbor, Isle of Angediva, Daman and Goa), São Tome and Principe, Mozambique, Macau, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde and Angola.
It enjoys official status in the Association of National Olympic Committees of Portuguese Official Language (ACOLOP), the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), the Latin Union, the Organization of American States (OAS), the African Union, and the European Union (EU). For almost 350 years, Portuguese was used as the special lingua franca on the island of Sri Lanka.
This language is written using 23 or 26 letters of the Latin alphabet. Globally, more than 30 million students study this language as part of their academic curriculum. Several eminent authors have appreciated the Portuguese dialect. Brazilian writer Olava Bilac poetically referred to it as a, última flor do Lácio, inculta e bela: "the last flower of Latium, wild and beautiful", described it as "sweet", Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes described it as “the sweet language” etc.
