Only speaking a language is not enough; knowing how to write in that language is equally vital. Take a quick look at the suffix added while writing French words and the punctuation marks in the French writing system. These simple techniques will definitely be a big help for your French writing learning.When you start writing French, you will find that many French words are quite similar to English words, only with slight spelling difference.

Adding Suffix- L'ajout du suffixe

  • For an English word ending in ‘y’, the suffix ‘é’ , ‘e’ or ‘i’ is added in French

E.g. : vanity – vanité, glory – gloire, party - parti

  • For an English word ending in ‘ance’, the suffix ‘ence’ or ‘ence’ is added in French

E.g. : independence – indépendance, presence – présence

  • For an English word ending in ‘ent’, the suffix ‘ant’ or ‘ent’ is added in French

E.g. : independent – indépendant, apparent - apparent

  • For an English word ending in ‘ing’, the prefix ‘en’ and suffix ‘ant’ is added in French

E.g. : studying - en étudiant, reading - en lisant

  • For an English word ending in ‘an’, the suffix ‘ain’ or ‘ien’ is added in French

E.g. : American – Américain, Canadian – Canadien

  • For an English word ending in ‘ese’, the suffix ‘ais’ or ‘ois’ is added in French

E.g. : Japanese – Japonais, Chinese – Chinois

  • For an English word ending in ‘ed’, ‘y’ the suffix ‘é’ is added in French

E.g. : finished – terminé,

  • For an English word ending in ‘al’, the suffix ‘el’ is added in French

E.g. : maternal – maternel

  • For an English word ending in ‘or’, ‘our’ or ‘er’, the suffix ‘eur’ is added in French

E.g. : author – auteur, honor/honour - honneur, sender – expéditeur

  • For an English word ending in ‘ous’, the suffix ‘eux’ is added in French

E.g. : fabulous - fabuleux

  • For an English word ending in ‘ive’, the suffix ‘if’ is added in French

E.g. : preventive – préventif

  • For an English word ending in ‘ic’or ‘ical’, the suffix ‘ique’ is added in French

E.g. : fantastic – fantastique, comical – comique

  • For an English word ending in ‘ise’or ‘ize’, the suffix ‘iser’ is added in French

E.g. : realize – réaliser, organise - organiser

  • For an English word ending in ‘isation’or ‘ization’, the suffix ‘isation’ is added in French

E.g. : realization – realisation, organisation- organisation

  • For an English word ending in ‘ist’or ‘istic’, the suffix ‘iste’ is added in French

E.g. : artist- artiste, optimistic - optimiste

  • For an English word ending in ‘ly’, the suffix ‘ment’ is added in French

E.g. : practically – pratiquement

  • For an English word ending in ‘ory’, the suffix ‘oire’ is added in French

E.g. : mandatory - obligatoire

  • For an English word ending in ‘shion’, ‘sson’& ‘son’ the suffix ‘çon’ is added in French

E.g. : fashion – façon, lesson- leçon, mason – maçon

  • For an English word ending in ‘er’or ‘re’, the suffix ‘re’ is added in French

E.g. : - letter – letter, centre/ center- centre

  • For an English word ending in ‘tion’, the suffix remains same in French

E.g. : - publication – publication, animation - animation

Punctuations - Ponctuations
Even though the punctuation marks used by French are same as English, there’s a huge difference in their uses.
Period (le point) (.)

  • Period is used to separate date elements

E.g.: 31.12.2000

  • In numbers, period or space is used to separate digits

E.g.: 100.000.000 or 100 000 000
Comma (la virgule) (,)

  • Comma is used as a decimal point

E.g.: 10.5 (English) – 10,5 (French)
Angle quotes (guillemets) (« »)

  • Guillemets are used instead of quotation marks. (There are no quotation marks in French)

E.g.: Jacque a dit: « J'ai faim.»
Colon (les deux-points) (:)

  • Colons are used for introduction of direct speech or conclusion, summary etc.

E.g.: Jacque a dit: « Tu es belle.»

The other punctuation marks like semi colon (;), question mark (?) and exclamation mark (!) have similar uses like English.
